Nourishing Young Minds: The Buhle–Bayer School Nutrition Project

In October 2022, Buhle Farmers’ Academy and Bayer launched a school nutrition initiative to combat hunger, improve learner nutrition, and empower local communities. What began as a pilot has grown into a beacon of sustainable development powered by partnership.

Buhle Farmers’ Academy has trained over 7,000 smallholder farmers across South Africa, equipping them with the skills to build sustainable, profitable enterprises.

Building Foundations for Success

The project established three state-of-the-art layer houses, each housing 1,000 birds, strategically located at Phaphamani High School, Delpark Primary School, and Swartklip Combined School. These sites are more than facilities — they are symbols of hope and self‑sufficiency.

Looking Forward: A Vision for Continued Impact

As we continue into 2025 and beyond, the Buhle–Bayer School Nutrition Project stands as proof that lasting community impact comes from sustainable partnerships. By combining innovative agriculture with community empowerment, we are not just feeding students — we are nurturing the foundations of a stronger, more food‑secure future: one egg, one child, one community at a time.

Visualizing Our Impact

A partnership between Buhle Farmers’ Academy and Bayer launched in October 2022 to combat hunger and improve learner nutrition while empowering local communities through on-site egg production at schools.

Three layer-house sites operate at Phaphamani High School, Delpark Primary School, and Swartklip Combined School, each housing approximately 1,000 birds.

Eggs produced on site are distributed to learners as a reliable, high-quality protein source. The project has already supported over 18,000 learners and continues to reach additional schools as production scales.

Production and site security are overseen by School Governing Body members and community teams. Six trained youth producers manage daily husbandry and quality, supported by dedicated night-security personnel.

Sites follow standard operating procedures for hygiene, housing, and feed; staff receive training in biosecurity and safe handling. Regular monitoring helps maintain the quality of eggs provided to learners.

Yes. Prospective sites typically need a secure location, School Governing Body support, reliable water and electricity, and community capacity for operations. Contact us to discuss readiness and next steps.
